Bluefins bounced back in style following their heavy defeat to City of Southampton earlier in the season. A determined Bluefins’ side took to the pool with the intension of giving the Southampton side a competitive match.

The match started brightly with the returning Allan Fairhead opening the scoring with a trade mark backhand shot after 2 minutes. Southampton hit back only to find Bluefins keeper Mike Sheath in top form saving several Southampton shots with ease. But Southampton weren’t to be denied and goals from Mclean and ex Basingstoke player Adams to leave the 1

1st quarter score at 1-2 to Southampton.

Southampton started the second quarter confident they could take control of the game and soon extended their lead through a King goal. Then a brace by Fairhead without a response from Southampton bought the Bluefins side back into the game. A goal by Adams for Southampton bought a quick response from Gavin Bridger completing a fine passing movement to bring Bluefins level. Adam’s once again proving a throne in the Bluefins defence completed his Southampton Hat trick to leave the Southampton side leading 4-5 at half time.

Bluefins pulled a goal back at the start of the third quarter with Trevor Jones getting on the score sheet and then Aaron Croucher broke up the lift side of the pool un seen by the Southampton defence to give the Bluefins the lead for the first time since the start of the game. Southampton through Adams then scored 3 goals without response to seeming take the game away from Bluefins, but the determination of the team with Trace Morgan and Dave Trewhella working tirelessly in the middle of the pool Bluefins struck back with goals from Simon Davis and Captain Steve Fairhead pulling the scores level. Southampton went ahead through a Williams’ strike but Allan Fairhead responded to leave the game all square at 9-9 to end the third quarter.

Captain Fairhead with another break from his defensive role broke to give Bluefins the lead only for Southampton’s Williams to pull the game level. With both teams pusing for victory Southampton took the lead with less than 2 minutes to go through Dunne. But Bluefins were still not finished and Allan Fairhead scored with 57 seconds left on the clock. At the restart the Southampton side broke and should have scored but fpor a fine save once again by Bluefins keeper Sheath, form his pass out Bluefins broke and found Jones in space to give Bluefins the lead with just 10 seconds left. With Sheath saving the final shot from Southampton giving Bluefins a memorable 12-11 victory.

Coach Gerry Lay said at the end of the game that "this was the best team performance of the year the Bluefins men have produced."
