On the 10th of May 2009, Dorset ladies came to the Aquadome for a nail biting friendly.

A quick first goal from Dorset set the tone for the first quarter of the match –   Basingstoke looked defeated facing a succession of Dorset goals.  Dorset were awarded a soft penalty when Basingstoke’s goalie Cat changed the rhythm of the game with a vital save.

After a motivating team talk from coach Steve Fairhead Basingstoke entered the second quarter looking like a different team, showing Dorset the strength of their side.  Basingstoke were unmoveable in defence and it wasn’t long before ‘Player of the Match’ Jo Davies got Basingstoke on the scoring board.  Hannah Chilton continued to pull Basingstoke back into the game with an excellent goal from the penalty spot.

The third quarter exhibited goals by skipper Pauline Lipscombe and Sarah Hickey to pull Basingstoke just 2 goals short of Dorset – only made possible by the solidarity of the Basingstoke’s defence, not allowing Dorset any space or time on the ball.

Basingstoke started the final quarter on fire with Hannah Chilton and Sarah Hickey scoring crucial goals, Jo Davies scoring a hat trick and captain Pauline Lipscombe scoring a final crucial lob goal resulting in Basingstoke, for the first time in the match, taking the lead 10-9 with just two minutes left on the clock.  With seconds left, Dorset’s top scorer got passed the Basingstoke defence resulting in a nail biting finish with both teams sharing the victory.

Basingstoke ladies showed great team strength, depth and determination in order to turn around the game which looked lost in the early stages.  A performance to be proud off.  A special thanks to coach Steve for his words of wisdom throughout the entire match which brought us back from a 6 nil defeat after the first quarter to finish the match 10-10.
