Weekend Match Report

Bluefins went into the final weekend just one point ahead of Newcastle and three ahead of Bedford, knowing they had to play two of the top four teams, both who had easily beaten the Bluefins earlier in the year.

The first game was against Sheffield. Bluefins started slowly and went two goals down but just before the end of the first quarter Michael Seipp scored to pull the Bluefins into the game. Bluefins started the second quarter strongly with Trace Morgan scoring to put Bluefins level but Sheffield, making the most of a couple of man-up situations, restored their two goal advantage before Andreas Kottas pulled one back right at the end of the 2nd quarter leave the half time score 3-4.

The third quarter left Bluefins exchange 2 goals a piece with Sheffield. Morgan again scoring and Nick Ludford getting onto the score sheet. Going into the fourth quarter Bluefins lost top scorer Kottas, excluded for the rest of the match, and fell a further goal down to leave the final score 5-7 to Sheffield.

Bluefins next match was against University of Bristol, a team who held Bluefins to a draw earlier in the season. This time Bluefins started strong with a goal from Kottas, only for Bristol to strike back with a long range goal. Trevor Jones then scored from out wide to restore the Bluefins lead, only for once again Bristol to strike back then, just before the whistle Steve Paton got his first goal of the season with a close range effort.

Buoyed by Paton’s goal, Bluefins took control of the game in the second quarter scoring five with only one reply with goals from Kottas, Morgan (2), Paul Adams and Ludford, to go in at half time 8-3 up.

The third quarter gave Bluefins the chance to play their full squad and ended up swapping 2 goals each with Bristol with goals from Kottas and a superb goal from Gavin Bridger which gave the Bristol goalie no chance.

The final quarter saw Bluefins scoring 4 more goals to Bristol’s 3. Bluefins scorers were Kottas, Seipp, Jones and Mike Bird getting his first of the season. Final score 14-8 to the Bluefins.

Bluefins went into their final match against the strongest side of the weekend; South Derbyshire, who had drawn with top side Caledonia and beaten second placed Warley the previous day. To add to the pressure the had just watched Bedford win their second game of the weekend so had moved to one point behind the Bluefins.

Bluefins shared 3 goals a piece with the Derby side in the first quarter with goals coming form Kottas, Adams and Ludford. The second quarter saw Bluefins go three goals down before rallying with goals from Ben Naylor and Kottas to go in at halftime 5-6 down.

The start of the third quart saw Naylor pull Bluefins level but once again Derby came back striking two goals before Ludford could get another back for the Bluefins. Derby scored another two goals to restore their 3 goal advantage but Richard Smith got another for the Bluefins to leave them 8-10 down going into the final quarter.

The Derby side quickly restored the 3 goal advantage right at the start of the final quarter, but three quick goals from Kottas, Adams and Naylor pulled the scores level and the Bluefins looked like they were going to push on and win, but a controversial refereeing decision saw Kottas arguing with the ref and being excluded from the rest of the match, and also conceding a penalty. Fortunately, the Derby side missed. The second controversial decision by the same ref came with 10 seconds left when Paton’s shot hit the bar rebounded off the back of the goalkeepers head at to what the Bluefins team and the majority of the crowd thought went into the net. Unfortunately the ref didn’t think so, leaving the final score 11-11 and ensuring Bluefins kept fifth place, due to the fact that they had a better recode against Bedford, who finished level on points after winning their final game.
