Basingstoke-B 9, Cranleigh-B 8

Our top match with Cranleigh B generated much interest and was watched by a capacity crowd of about 18, many of whom travelled many yards to watch these two teams in action. After a moment's silence (when we were all looking for the match ball) the match started off, and from the beginning Basingstoke outnumbered Cranleigh in all areas of the pitch, especially the subs bench :)

With several new players, Basingstoke started slowly, and the first quarter ended in Cranleigh's favour 3-2, despite a great opening goal by Brad and a superb strike by Hilton in the lower left corner.

The second quarter saw a switch of keeper as Brad (A team goalie) took a spell in the net. This resulted in a goalless quarter for Cranleigh and then Paul, Basingstoke's youngest player, really made Cranleigh worry by easily beating the keeper to level the score at 3-3.

The start of the second half saw Basingstoke grow in confidence. Kelli broke down the wing before altruistically squaring to Rob who scored easily. Unfortunately Cranleigh rallied and snatched 2 goals back while the defence was napping. Brad, now back on pitch seemed to have a new lease of life, leading to suspicions of illegal drug use (urine samples may be required by the governing body). Brad screamed a shot in from just inside the halfway bring the score to 5 all. But Cranleigh were in no mood to give up their lead just yet, and struck back to leave the score 6-5 to Cranleigh at the end of the 3rd quarter

In the last quarter Basingstoke's strength in numbers really started to tell as the goals poured in, with Lizzie scoring her first goal for the team, closely followed by a goal from Pauline. Cranleigh scored again despite a valiant attempt to chase back and tackle by Lindsay, the ball driven home to remind Basingstoke its not over yet. Pauline then struck again with a fantastic shot curling away from the keeper to cap a fine performance. Cranleigh then managed to pull another one back with the keeper blaming it on the wet conditions :) to level the score at 8 all. Tension reached fever pitch as the clock counted down, then Mike, as the last minute approached, lashed it hard across the goal into the top right of the net past a despairing Cranleigh keeper's outstretched hand to make in 9-8 to Basingstoke. Pressure from Cranleigh soured in the last minute was but absorbed by some great defending from Andy as the final whistle blew.

Quote of the Match: Maybe England should tune in to see how its done

Man of the match: Pauline for a cracking goal in the last quarter!
