Basingstoke Bluefins kicked off their National League division 3 seasons with 2 defeats and one victory at Sheffield last weekend. Bluefins first match was against National League new boys Caledonia from Scotland.

Knowing this would be a tough game against one of the favourites for promotion Bluefins started well ending the quarter 5-3 down but also lost goalkeeper Chris Seipp, sent off for decent. Steve Paton took up the goalkeepers hat and produced some great saves against a rampant Cally side who by the end of the 3rd quarter had established 5-12 lead. Bluefins fought back in the last quarter but still ended the game 8-17 losers. Bluefins goal scorers Nick Ludford 4, Trevor Jones 2 and Paul Hunt 1.

Bluefins next games was against Warley who had last year been relegated from division 2. Bluefins started this game really slowly and at half time found themselves 2-7 down after a few stern words from their coach Chris Seipp Bluefins held Warley to a goal less 3rd quarter and then managed to step up their game to win the last 3-2 Bluefins scorers Nick Ludford 3 and Trevor Jones 2

With confidence gained from the last half of the Warley game the Bluefins took on Newcastle and after a goalless first quarter the game burst into life following an exclusion of Bluefins Trace Morgan Newcastle made the most of their man up to take the lead Bluefins the upped the tempo of the game and fought back with goals from Gavin Bridger and Nick Ludford. To end the second quarter 2-1 up. The third quarter was a closely fought with Newcastle firstly pulling level but Nick Ludford responded with two goals to extend the Bluefins lead but with Steve Paton getting an exclusion Newcastle pulled a goal back just before the end of the quarter to leave the game at 4-3 to Bluefins going into the last quarter. This quarter didn’t start well with Nick Ireland getting excluded and Newcastle taking full advantage to pull the game to level. Bluefins then had Michael Seipp sent out for the game but for once Newcastle didn’t take advantage and a long range shot from Bluefins Richard Smith with two minutes to go restored the lead for the Basingstoke team as Newcastle pushed for the equaliser Trevor Jones broke down the left to but Bluefins 6-4 up with 10 seconds left.
