Basingstoke Bluefins Polo team in their last 2 Hampshire league games have seen the club extend their 100% winning record to 5 games. The Bluefins finished off Bournemouth 8 - 3 and Andover 13 – 8 to maintain their position at the top of the league.

Their next game is against another team boasting 100% record - City of Southampton. The victors of this game are likely to finish the season as league champions.

Against Bournemouth the team put in a solid performance, winning the 1st quarter 2 – 0 with goals from B Naylor and G Bridger.

Bournemouth came back strongly in the 2nd period out scoring the Bluefins to close the lead to just 1 goal. However the highlight of the quarter was a 1st league goal from A team debutant Aaron Croucher. His efforts helped the Bluefins maintain their lead. The quarter ended 4 – 3 to the Bluefins.

Bluefins responded strongly in the 3rd period by keeping a clean sheet. 2 goals from Bridger and Naylor, repeating their efforts of the 1st quarter helped the team move ahead 6 – 3.

In the 4th period the Bluefins never looked back. Paul Hunt and Bridger scored in this period to close the game out 8 – 3.

The Bluefins captain Steve Paton reported ‘he was happy with the result and the manner in which the team adapted their style to the narrow pool. He was also very impressed with youngsters Croucher and Oliver Espinasse.’

The Andover game really tested the team. The Bluefins opened the game well with a goal from Dave Trewhella. Andover responded strongly and scored 4 goals due to some poor Bluefins defensive work, to lead the game 4 -1.

The 2nd period saw the Bluefins score 3 goals from Paul Adams, B Naylor and P Hunt. However the defensive problems were still evident and Andover took advantage of this to score 3 goals, the period closed 7 – 4 to Andover.

Prior to the start of the 3rd period Bluefins coach Gerry Lay gave the team some strong words of criticism regarding their defensive shortcomings. The Bluefins responded positively with much better defensive organisation and better movement going forward. This much improved teamwork lead to 3 goals from Steve Paton, Paul Hunt and Steve Fairhead. Bluefins pulled the game back to 7 – 7.

The Bluefins started the 4th period taking advantage of the upper hand they had defensively from the 3rd period, to play some of their best polo. The Bluefins scored 8 goals with Ben Naylor bagging a hatrick in this period. Goals from Trace Morgan, Paul Hunt, Dave Trewhella, Paul Adams pushing the Blueifns further ahead. The Bluefins saved their best to last, a great 15m fast crossfield pass from Steve Fairhead was neatly tapped in at the far post by Oliver Espinasse. The period closed out with the Bluefins winning 15 – 10.

Bluefins coach Gerry told the team ‘he was very impressed, the team were under pressure at the start but excellent teamwork saw the Bluefins gain control of the game’.
