The Bluefins team have started the 2007 Hampshire league seasoin fine form. Unbeaten so far, they have seen off Weymouth and Bournemouth at home and Portsmouth and City of Southampton away. They are the only team in the league with a 100% record.

They opened their season with a great victory of Weymouth. The team from the south west were amongst the favourites to head up the league and they brought along a powerful squad. Bluefins started the season with a slight adjustment to their playing style, playing with a high pool press, defending much higher up the pool, putting the attacking team under early pressure.

The tactic paid off immediately, with the Bluefins taking the lead. Unusually for the renouned slow starting team, they lead at the end of the 1st period by 3 goals. From there they never looked back. They continued to over power the Weymouth team to win the game 11 – 8.

Bluefins next game was another home game versus Bournemouth. Again they started the game with a high pool press. Surprisingly Bournemouth started the stronger and got away to a 2 goal lead. Before a double Alan Fairhead and the evergreen Dave Trewhella & 2 more from the visitors saw the 1st period close out 4 – 4.

The 2nd period saw the Bluefins pull away scoring 7 goals, from A Fairhead (4), T Morgan, Adam Hilliard and amazingly the goalie Paul Adams. The period ended with the home team in the lead 11 – 6.

From then the result was never in doubt. More Bluefins goals from A Fairhead, Hilliard, Steve Fairhead, Trewhella and another from Adams the goalie. The match ended with the Bluefins victourious 17 – 13.

The 1st away game of the season was played against Portsmouth. The sailors are the weakest team in the league. The result was never in doubt and the Bluefins cruised through the match to win 19 – 5.

The finest result of the season to date was away to the current league champions City of Southampton. The Bluefins have not won at their venue in over 5 years. The 'fins started the game positively, pressing the home team hard. Goals from Adams & Trewhella helped the visitors to close out the quarter 2 – 1.

As expected Southampton came back strong and managed to score 3 past Bluefins stand-in keeper Steve Paton, normally an out field player. Again, Adams & Trewhella kept the Bluefins in touch and the scores were 4 – 4 at the half way stage. Again the 3rd period was another close affair with both teams grabbing 3 goals. Morgan, Adams and Naylor were on target for the Bluefins and keeper Paton prevented a near certain goal at the end of the 3rd period, score was 7 – 7.

Bluefins moved in to top gear in the 4th; they maintained their tough defensive strategy and slowly Southampton faded away. They outscored Southampton by 3 goals to 1, thanks to Naylor, Morgan and A Fairhead. The 4th period ended with the Bluefins victourious 10 – 8.

This was the first time in over 5 years that the Bluefins had beaten the dominant Southampton. Captain Paton was ecstatic following the victory. He told the team ‘the result was thoroughly deserved. We took the lead in the 1st period and kept playing hard, and eventually the pressure payed off.’

The next Bluefins Hampshire league game is against a strong Southampton Uni, on 21st Feb. The team are now off to Jersey to play in the inaugrial South East Polo league, playing Jersey, Southampton, Cranleigh & Oxford.

Bluefins team;
Steve Paton, Paul Adams, Ben Naylor, Steve Fairhead, Alan Fairhead, Trace Morgan, Gavin Bridger, Dave Trewhella, Alan Fairhead, Adam Hilliard, Spencer Turner, Mike Hammond, Rob Stone-Ward.
