South Derby 18; Basingstoke Bluefins 13

Sutton & Cheam 6; Basingstoke Bluefins 11

Warley 14; Basingstoke Bluefins 7

Another National League weekend for the Basingstoke Bluefins resulted in disappointing results, but very encouraging play.

the first game of the weekend for Basinstoke was against South Derby, which started with a disapointing first two quarters. The second half performance saw the 'Fins scoring 1 more goal the opposition, but the 6 goal lead that had been created in the first half kept the game out of Bluefins' reach, finishing 18-13

This encouraging finish was taken into Basingstoke's second game of the day, against one of the teams fighting for the division title. Sutton & Cheam, with the hugely powerful ex- GB international player were outright favourites, but the Bluefins put in an admirable performance. For the first 3 quarters the score line never differed by more than a goal, finishing 6-6. But come the final period the experience of Sutton & cheam, for which this was their only game of the day, broke though the exhausted Bluefins to finish 6-11

Sunday lunchtime saw the bluefins playing their 3rd match of the weekend against another title contender, Warley. It was another great show, "possibly being the best performance from the Bluefins within National League this year, and maybe even any previous years for that matter", pointed out team coach Tevor Jones in the post-match de-briefing. As with the day before, the game was level pegging with a tit-for-tat score line for most of the game. But once again in the last quarter of the match the Midlanders pulled away, to finish the match 7-14.

The Bluefins aren't exactly having a great run this year on the National League circuit, maybe largely due to the new league structure. With the introduction of a new division and shuffle of the others, Div. 3 - which the 'Fins comfortably finished mid-table last year - is now a much tougher playground.

None the less, even though the 3 losses is a bitter pill to swallow, 2 of the teams that Basingstoke played this weekend are fighting it out for the title, and the Bluefins performance in these matches should be extremely encouraging.
