Portsmouth mixed v Basingstoke Bluefins Ladies

Bluefins ladies travelled down to Portsmouth for their first macth of the season due to Portsmouth being a newer club they don’t yet have enough players for a full ladies side so the Bluefins ladies played a mixed opposition…. This was the first outing for new Bluefins players Helen Meckiffe and Holly  Rowland both joining Bluefins over the summer break.

Bluefins started the game in a nervous fashion having to play against physically larger men but they stuck to their task well and soon opened the scoring through a Hannah Chilton bounce shot following greta work on the wing from Claire Liggins., both showing the benefit from playing for Southampton in the British league, Portsmouth hit back with a long range effort to end the first quarter 1-1 and all to play for.

Bluefins started the 2nd quarter with a press defence which Portsmouth couldn’t cope with and soon Bluefins were able to create counter attacks down both wings Cara Malone playing on the right was soon creating chance after chance for the team and some excellent pressure by Jess Matthews on the Portsmouth keeper earned her a penalty which she dispatched giving Bluefins the lead,. New players Helen and Holly soon got in the scoring act with drives from the top of the arc as Bluefins began to dominate the match.  Pauline Lane Rebekah Woolcot and Gina Lay took a solid grip in midfield stifling Portsmouth attack to long range efforts.end of second quarter score was 5-2 to Bluefins

A frustrated Portsmouth upped the physicality on the 3rd quarter in an effort to force their way through the Bluefins defensive formation But typified by the smallest player on the pitch Esmee Ng having to mark men twice her size Bluefins defence held firm and soon got themselves back into the game with goals from Gina,  Rebekah and a Pauline end of quarter Bluefins led 8-6

Bluefins changed their defensive tatics at the start of the the quarter and to start with this allowed Portsmouth back into the game but the ladies in the pool stuck to their task pushing up higher in the pool onto Portsmouth and a quick break by Cara setting up helen soon restored the lead , Cara  then had another break to set up Hannah as once again Bluefins took control of the game with Gina adding to her tally and Cara scoring the last goal sealing a fine 12- 8 victory for the Bluefins.

Esmee Ng, Gina lay, Pauline Lane, Claire Liggins, Hannah Chilton, Helen Meckiffe,Jess Matthews,  Holly Rowland, Cara Malone and Rebekah Woolcot captain.
